MLB home gallery was founded in January 2007.
Since then, every year when leading events are on in Ferrara and in the Emilia-Romagna region, such as the inauguration of major exhibits at the nearby Palazzo dei Diamanti, collaborating artists at MLB are asked to develop thematically related projects but with a modern outlook.
The results are site-specific projects which often require over a year of preparation, and usually involve the entire city of Ferrara.
As an example, when Palazzo dei Diamanti hosted the exhibit on Turner, MLB arranged a parallel exhibition by Japanese photographer Masuyama, that focused on Turner's cultural journeys in Italy.
During the dates of the Internazionale Festival in Ferrara, which is usually focused on socio-political issues, the city was invaded by monuments of endangered species created by Stefano Bombardieri (called the “Faunal Countdown”).
Even for the expos it is invited at, MLB designs real curatorial projects.
At Arte Fiera 2011 the MLB stand recreated the same informal and relaxed atmosphere of its home gallery: visitors were welcomed with a coffee, guided to see the artworks and finally invited to rest on the large rose-shaped sofa by Ketty Tagliatti, a tribute to the concept of “welcoming home gallery”. It was the most crowded stand of the whole expo.
